Funding has been announced to transform Gwent Square in Cwmbran into a multi-functional public space.
The redevelopment plans are expected to include new seating, trees and a new food and drink area, subject to planning permission and additional funding. If approved, it is hoped work will begin in spring 2027.
It is part of a wider project that will see neighbouring Gwent House turned into social housing flats and new community and health facilities.
The Welsh Government has agreed to allocate at least £1.25 million towards the £2.5 million project through its Transforming Towns programme.
The news came as a new JD Sports mega store and 24hr gym was officially opened in Cwmbran town centre, thanks to Transforming Towns investment and funding from M Cwmbran, which owns Cwmbran Shopping.
Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government Jayne Bryant said:
“It was fantastic to attend the opening of the new JD Sports store and gym in Cwmbran and see first-hand how Welsh Government investment is transforming our town and city centres.
“I'm proud that the Welsh Government is continuing to invest in Cwmbran town centre through our commitment to support the delivery of the next phase of Gwent Square's regeneration, building on the excellent progress already made.
“Transforming Towns is about more than just physical improvements – it's about creating sustainable, prosperous communities where people want to live, work and visit. The regeneration of Gwent Square is a perfect example of how targeted investment can revitalise our town centres and delivers lasting benefits for local people.”

Cllr Joanne Gauden, Torfaen Council's Executive Member for Economy, Skills and Regeneration, added:
“The new JD Sports gym and store and the proposed Gwent Square and Gwent House redevelopments are key elements in the council's Placemaking Plan for Cwmbran.
“They demonstrate how by working together with partners like Welsh Government, third sector organisations and local businesses, we can secure investment to create vibrant, attractive town centres.”
The new JD Sports store and gym opened as part of a £4.36 million renovation of the former House of Fraser building, overlooking Gwent Square.
The investment follows Transforming Towns grants of £244,711 to renovate 95/95A Broad Street Blaenavon in 2023 and £236,733 to renovate the former Scrum Half in Pontypool in 2024.
More than £500,000 has been earmarked for regeneration projects in Cwmbran and Pontypool this year, with a further £450,000 for projects in Blaenavon and Pontypool next year.
