Caerphilly County Borough Council says a “major step” has been taken towards securing the long-term future of Blackwood Miners’ Institute (BMI).
The council’s Cabinet, meeting in its capacity as Trustee, approved a series of recommendations outlining the “positive work undertaken over recent months to support the venue’s sustainability and development”.
The Cabinet agreed to progress plans to undertake a market-testing exercise that will assess interest from experienced external cultural organisations in managing the day-to-day running of the venue.
The council said this approach will allow it to retain ownership of the building while securing a delivery partner to increase the sustainability of the current operating model and reduce the level of subsidy required from the local authority.
Leader of Council, Cllr Jamie Pritchard, said:
“I’m pleased that Cabinet has endorsed the next phase of work to secure a strong and sustainable future for Blackwood Miners’ Institute.
“By approving these proposals, we are taking clear and positive steps to protect this important venue for the community and ensure it continues to thrive for years to come.
“This decision allows us to move forward confidently, recognising BMI’s importance to residents in the area and across the county borough. I'd like to thank all members of staff, and visitors to the BMI for their support.”
Council officers will now begin the formal market-testing process, with a further report to be presented once the outcomes are known.
