A new community-focused takeaway café has officially opened its doors in the heart of Waunfawr Park, Crosskeys, thanks to a match funded £5,136.76 capital grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Business Development Grant 2024/25.

Founded by local entrepreneurs Alec Holdaway and Sophie Prince, The Hatch @ Waunfawr Park is a new addition to the park, offering refreshments including barista coffee, ice cream, toasties, sandwiches, fruit, and cakes. The kiosk is expected to create two full-time jobs and up to 10 part-time seasonal roles.

The funding has enabled Alec to equip the kiosk with essential catering equipment, including a commercial coffee machine and grinder, sourced from local supplier Big Dog Coffee in Blackwood, refrigeration units, an ice cream freezer, and external signage to enhance visibility and accessibility.

Alec Holdaway, Co-Owner of The Hatch, said:

“We are particularly grateful to Sally Harvey (Senior Investment Officer) and Adam Sadler (Principal Business Development Officer), whose professionalism, responsiveness, and dedication were truly outstanding. Their willingness to go above and beyond ensured that the Crosskeys community would benefit from the development of a new community asset.

“With the support of the UKSPF grant, we were able to purchase essential equipment required to deliver a high-quality catering service. Without the guidance and continued support of the Investment Team, this project would not have been possible. Thanks to their efforts, we are now proud to serve the local community of Crosskeys and contribute to the broader Caerphilly County Borough area with a vibrant and welcoming space within Waunfawr Park.”

The Hatch is already working with several local businesses, including Beth’s Bakes, Mrs Brown’s Bakes, and Nos Da Bakery, to offer a range of locally made sweet treats.

Adam Sadler, Principal Business Development Officer at Caerphilly County Borough Council, added:

“The Hatch provides a welcome refreshment area catering for all locals and visitors to the park. The business team are delighted to be able to support this venture and will continue to offer support going forward.”

Looking ahead, Alec plans to expand the business by introducing a seating area and, in the longer term, exploring opportunities to replicate the model in other local parks.
