Calls for continued government support for tidal energy as Minister visits Anglesey

Continued government support will unlock quality jobs, supply-chain growth and greater energy security for Wales through tidal energy. This was Menter Môn Morlais’ message during a visit by Welsh Government Cabinet Minister Adam Price MS last week.

At the Morlais tidal scheme on Ynys Môn, the Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy heard how the project will contribute to Wales’ green energy future. The scheme is already creating opportunities for local businesses and apprentices, with further economic benefits as it develops.

It was the Minister’s first opportunity to see Morlais in person and learn more about the growing importance of marine renewables in Wales’ transition to net zero. Discussions focused on tidal energy’s potential to deliver reliable renewable electricity, support climate ambitions and strengthen the UK’s long-term energy resilience.

Speaking during the visit, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price, said:

“Morlais is a fantastic example of how our natural resources can power economic renewal as well as generate clean energy and ensure communities are central to the renewable energy transition.

“When developed sustainably, tidal energy offers the potential for reliable, predictable power while creating skilled jobs, strengthening Welsh supply chains and retaining more of the value generated here in our communities. We want Wales to be at the forefront of this growing global industry.”

Chair of Menter Môn Morlais, John Idris Jones added:

“We were delighted to welcome Adam Price to Morlais and show him the progress we have made here in recent years. This visit highlights the growing recognition of tidal energy’s role in delivering clean power while creating skilled jobs and opportunities for local people. As a community-led project, Morlais is responding to the need for clean energy while helping to strengthen the local economy and ensure the benefits of are felt here on Ynys Môn.

“Morlais is helping to put Wales and the UK on the map in the global marine energy sector. However, we need continued support to build on this progress so we can realise our full potential.”

The visit highlighted the role of continued government support in taking Morlais forward and maximising the economic opportunities that tidal energy could bring to Wales.
