The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways has won a National Rail Heritage Award for the redevelopment of the Boston Lodge Works near Porthmadog.
With a history stretching back almost 200 years, the works has been reconstructed and redeveloped to support the railway's needs for the coming decades.
The most recent £5 million phase of works was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Ffestiniog Railway Society and the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway Trust.
This support has made it possible to conserve and recreate many of the historic buildings on site in addition to creating new facilities.
Commenting on the Network Rail Award for best overall entry, Paul Lewin, the railways’ director and general manager, said one of the great wins from the project was finding current day uses for the buildings whilst maintaining their historic fabric and opening the workshop to visitors through an innovative hosted tour programme.
Nigel Burbidge, new FRCo chair, paid tribute to his predecessor Dr John Prideaux for his vision and leadership of the Boston Lodge Project over the last decade.
During 2026, members of the public will be able to visit the historic workshops and see the results for themselves as part of the Boston Lodge Tour programme, tickets for which are available from www.festrail.co.uk .
