As someone who works closely with food and drink businesses at BIC Innovation, I’m continuously inspired by the support that Wales offers to help our industry thrive.
The recent Blas Cymru / Taste Wales event served as a fantastic platform to showcase the wide-ranging support available to Welsh food and drink producers. Whether you’re a new startup navigating the basics of regulation and production, or an established company looking to scale, attract investment, or enter export markets, there’s tailored guidance available at every step.
The level of support provided by the Welsh Government is, in many ways, unmatched in the UK. When I speak with colleagues in England and Scotland, they’re often astounded by the variety and depth of assistance accessible to Welsh businesses.
This year’s Blas Cymru / Taste Wales conference offered attendees the chance to engage directly with experts across multiple fields, ensuring that no matter what stage of business development they’re in, they have access to the insights and resources they need to succeed.
Looking to the future, one trend in particular is gaining traction in the food industry: the move towards healthier, more authentic food options. Health-conscious consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of their dietary choices and are seeking out products that prioritise nutrition and real ingredients over artificial additives and excess processing. This shift aligns perfectly with Wales' strengths as a producer of high-quality, nutrient-rich foods.
The rising backlash against ultra-processed foods, particularly those with high sugar and salt content, signals a change that could benefit Welsh producers significantly. Wales has long been known for its excellent red meat and dairy production, both of which are often produced with sustainability and quality at the forefront. As more people move toward “real food”—products that are less processed, more natural, and rooted in tradition—Welsh farmers and food producers are in an ideal position to meet this demand.
At BIC Innovation, we see this growing trend as not only a market shift but a tremendous opportunity for Welsh businesses to lead the way in healthy, wholesome food production.
With the backing of robust government support and a consumer base increasingly interested in quality and health, Welsh food and drink is well-positioned for a strong and healthy future.
The world is moving back toward real food, and Wales is ready to deliver.
