
Businesses in the South Wales Valleys are gaining access to levels of digital infrastructure traditionally concentrated around major UK cities, potentially strengthening the region's ability to attract AI, technology and data-driven investment.
A new connection delivered by Transport for Wales' ffeibr network has linked Cloud Centres with Vantage Data Centres in South Wales, creating a high-speed route into one of Europe's largest data centre campuses.
The development means businesses connected to the network can access the resilient, high-capacity infrastructure increasingly required for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other data-intensive applications.
But the wider economic opportunity could extend beyond faster connectivity. For areas of the South Wales Valleys seeking to attract new industries and investment, access to this type of infrastructure could begin to remove one of the disadvantages traditionally associated with locating technology businesses outside major metropolitan centres.
The network has been developed alongside the electrification of the Core Valley Lines, effectively using investment in Wales' rail infrastructure to create an additional digital backbone across the region.
It means the infrastructure being delivered to improve public transport is also creating the foundations for another potential area of economic growth.
Access to resilient digital infrastructure has become increasingly important as businesses adopt cloud platforms, automation and artificial intelligence.
TfW ffeibr believes its network could help put communities such as Church Village on a more equal digital footing with larger urban centres, potentially changing perceptions about where technology and data-driven businesses can locate.
The latest development builds on ffeibr's launch in November 2024.
Cloud Centres Networks became its first commercial contract, connected in partnership with Cardiff University in 2025.
The network has since been extended into central Cardiff and has now connected the Cloud Centres facility directly with Vantage, strengthening the digital infrastructure running through South Wales' growing data centre corridor.

“By combining public investment with innovative delivery, TfW ffeibr is extending world class digital connectivity into the Valleys, not just our cities, and creating new opportunities for jobs, enterprise and innovation.
“Crucially, it's a model that keeps value within Wales – reinvesting in our communities and helping us build a more resilient, inclusive and self reliant economy.”
One of the more significant aspects of the project is how the network has been created.
Rather than developing an entirely separate infrastructure corridor, the full-fibre network has been built in parallel with the electrification of the Core Valley Lines. That creates the potential for investment originally centred on improving transport connectivity to deliver a wider economic dividend.
It could also provide a model for considering how major infrastructure investments in Wales can be used to deliver multiple benefits, particularly as demand for digital capacity grows.
For the Valleys, the opportunity is particularly significant.
Guy Reiffer, Managing Director of ffeibr, said access to high-quality digital infrastructure had historically been concentrated around major cities.

The development comes as access to computing capacity, data centres and high-performance networks becomes increasingly important to economic competitiveness.
AI adoption in particular is creating growing requirements for businesses to move and process large quantities of data reliably and securely.
Creating that infrastructure outside Wales' main urban centres could therefore become part of the proposition for attracting technology businesses into communities where property, skills and economic regeneration opportunities already exist.
The connection between Cloud Centres and Vantage also provides additional resilience for organisations using multiple hosting locations.

If high-capacity connectivity can be extended deeper into the Valleys, it could strengthen the case for businesses involved in AI, cloud technology, advanced manufacturing and other data-intensive industries to invest in locations previously overlooked in favour of Britain's largest cities.
That could turn a fibre network developed alongside Wales' railway infrastructure into something considerably more important: part of the economic infrastructure required to compete for the industries and investment of the future
