The Ship in Barry has collected more than 4,000 plastic tubs as part of Greene King’s Tub2Pub recycling campaign which stops tubs going to landfill and raises money for charity.
There has been overwhelming support from Barry residents, the Rotary Club and other local community groups this year with a record number of tubs dropped off at the pub. These polypropylene tubs cannot always be recycled through kerbside collections and can end up in landfill. Greene King takes the tubs to a specialist recycling plant and money raised from the sale of the recycled plastic is donated to its national charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.
General manager of the Hungry Horse pub on Harbour Road, Lee Cooke, said:
“The people of Barry have shown just how much they care about the environment and charity. This is a brilliant example of how collective action by individual customers and groups in the community can have a really positive impact – with the pub right at the heart of it. The Ship team is delighted to see such support and know that we have all worked together to help the planet and people living with cancer. Many thanks to each and everyone one of you who dropped off your tubs. It’s been a record year for us.”
Over the last five years, Tub2Pub, a nationwide Greene King initiative, has collected 54,665kg of plastic – which is around 475,348 tubs – raising £35,247 for Macmillan.
