Resurfacing work at Malpas Road in Newport will start on Friday 13 February.
The work forms part of Newport City Council's major road resurfacing programme, which started last summer, and will see £6.6 million of maintenance and improvements.
The logistics and technicalities of planning the work at Malpas Road are extremely complex, the council said. This is not only due to the road’s location, but also a large number of utilities pipes and cables that run under the road.
The council it was also informed last month that one of these utilities pipes requires maintenance work. This needed to be factored into the work plan, it said, as it does not want the pipe repairs being carried out after the resurfacing work.
The work will be split into a number of phases.
Phase 1 – Barrack Hill footbridge to Goodrich Crescent junction
8pm, Friday 13 February to 5am, Monday 16 February.
8pm, Friday 20 February to 5am, Monday 23 February.
During these times, the road will be fully closed to all through traffic from Harlequin Roundabout to the M4 junction 26 roundabout. Pedestrian access will remain available at all times.
Resident access to Goodrich Crescent and the Brynglas area will be facilitated as much as possible, but won’t be possible in the immediate vicinity of the work.
Utilities works – 23 February to 3 April
During this period, Wales & West Utilities will be carrying out maintenance work on their gas pipes on Malpas Road, in between the two junctions of Goodrich Crescent.
They will be carrying out work during the week, from Monday to Friday. Hours of work will be restricted to between 9.30am-3.30pm.
Lane closures will be used during this period, with temporary traffic lights in place to control traffic.
Phase 2 – Goodrich Crescent junction to 77 Malpas Road (approx.)
Dates to be confirmed. Times and information as Phase 1 above.
Phases 3 and 4 – 77 Malpas Road (approx.) to M4 junction 26
Dates to be confirmed. Times and information as Phase 1 above.
Dates for phases 2, 3 and 4 will be published by the council as soon as they are confirmed.
All timings are provisional and subject to change in the event of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.
The council advises anyone planning a journey around this area during these periods to plan ahead.
