Gwynedd Pupils Explore Construction Careers at Tŷ Gwyrddfai Event

Pupils from Ysgol Llanllyfni had a taste of the world of construction at a special event hosted at Tŷ Gwyrddfai, the groundbreaking decarbonisation hub in Gwynedd.

The event, arranged by Adra in partnership with Reaching Wider and John Kelly Construction, provided an experience for the pupils from Ysgol Llanllyfni in the Nantlle Valley, offering them the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities related to construction skills, including bricklaying and plastering. These sessions were were hosted by Stuart Owen from Webber, one of Tŷ Gwyrddfai’s main sponsors. They also had a health and safety introduction from Lisa Kelly-Roberts of John Kelly Constructions.

There were also sessions on other aspects of construction, including picking up and delivering materials, using different materials to build structures and using a variety of soft skills like measuring and budgeting to understand every aspect of the work. John Kelly Construction were also keen to highlight all these aspects so that the children had an idea of the work currently going on at Tre Dafydd, Penygroes.

Llinos Bracegirdle, Social Value Coordinator at Adra, said:

“We were delighted to pilot our first primary school event at Tŷ Gwyrddfai, working in partnership with Reaching Wider and John Kelly Construction.

“It was great to see the children being inspired by the range of hands-on activities we had arranged. I hope today has inspired some of Llanllyfni’s children and hope this is the first of many successful days like this”.

Rhian Richardson, Stem Outreach Communicator for Reaching Wider Partnership, said:

“We were delighted to work in partnership with Adra. It’s great to highlight what’s available for young people within the construction industry, and to show local children the variety of opportunities that are on their doorstep.”

Tŷ Gwyrddfai is a collaborative project between Adra, Busnes@LlandrilloMenai and Bangor University that has transformed the former industrial site into a decarbonisation hub working with communities and businesses to retrofit homes over the coming years.
