Work to Start on New Courtyard in Swansea City Centre

Mowbray Yard

A new green courtyard in the heart of Swansea city centre will soon begin to take shape in honour of the late Huw Mowbray, a much-loved and highly respected Swansea Council officer whose vision and dedication helped transform the city's landscape.

Construction of Mowbray Yard – named in tribute to Mr Mowbray, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 59 – will start this month following the appointment of Horan Construction Ltd as the main contractor.

The courtyard, set to feature trees, planting and new street furniture, will form part of a new pedestrian link between The Kingsway and Oxford Street.

Designed as a welcoming and relaxing space, it will offer greenery and calm in the heart of the city centre for people who live in, work in and visit Swansea.

Council Leader Cllr Rob Stewart said:

“We're delighted to confirm the appointment of a contractor to deliver Mowbray Yard – a beautiful new courtyard that will stand as a lasting tribute to Huw.

“His dedication, energy and vision helped shape many of Swansea's most significant regeneration project in recent years, so it's only fitting that this space bears his name.

“Mowbray Yard will not only enhance our city centre environment but also reflect Huw's passion for creating spaces that people can enjoy and be proud of.”

During his long and distinguished career with Swansea Council, father-of-two Mr Mowbray played a key role in delivering many of the city's landmark regeneration projects, including the Swansea.com Stadium, Swansea Arena, and the revamp of Wind Street.

Due for completion in spring 2026, Mowbray Yard will sit to the rear of the council's new 71/72 Kingsway office development – a project that forms part of Swansea's wider city centre regeneration programme and is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal.

Eighty per cent of the office space at 71/72 Kingsway is now let, with hundreds of workers from companies including TUI and Futures First having now moved in.

Further tenants will be announced in the coming weeks.
