Cardiff Capital Region Latest Podcast Episode Showcases Regeneration Success at Tower Colliery

place making and regeneration

The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) has launched the second episode of its podcast series featuring a discussion of one of the region’s most successful regeneration stories – the transformation of Tower Colliery by Zip World.

The episode – Place-Making and Regeneration, How Cardiff Capital Region’s Investment in Zip World Transformed Tower Colliery – explores how CCR’s £4.4 million repayable loan to Zip World in 2020 not only brought new life to the iconic site but also enabled wider economic benefits for the region.

The landmark investment supported the creation of Zip World Tower, a world-class adventure attraction on the site of one of Wales’ most historically significant coal mines.

Featuring insights from Sean Taylor, Founder of Zip World; Kellie Beirne, CEO of Cardiff Capital Region; and Antony Hunt, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, the episode delves into the strategic thinking behind the investment, the challenges of repurposing such an iconic site, and the ripple effect it has had on job creation, community pride, and investor confidence.

Kellie Beirne said:

“This wasn’t just about funding a tourist attraction. It was about transforming a place, creating employment, preserving heritage, and building a springboard for future investment in the Valleys. It’s a prime example of what place-based investment can achieve when aligned with bold vision and strong partnerships.”

Sean Taylor shared his perspective as a homegrown entrepreneur and driving force behind Zip World’s expansion into South Wales, saying:

“Bringing Tower Colliery back to life in a way that respects its legacy while creating new opportunities for the future has been one of the most meaningful projects of my career.”

With thousands of visitors flocking to the site each month and Zip World exploring plans to continue to expand the attraction, the episode shines a light on how targeted public-private partnerships are making a measurable difference in communities across the Cardiff Capital Region.

The podcast is available now on all major streaming platforms, you can also listen to the podcast via the Business News Wales website here.
