Lessons From Green Man on Embracing Sustainability

GUEST COLUMN:

Fiona Stewart
Owner and Managing Director
Green Man

Sustainability might be something of a buzzword in business, but at Green Man it really is the very fabric of our ethos.

From day one, our commitment has been to pave a sustainable path, championing innovations that not only define but redefine what it means to host an environmentally conscious event.

Our festival has become a centrepoint for conversations around climate activism, inviting attendees to engage deeply with critical environmental issues. By partnering with organisations like WaterAid and promoting sustainable living, we actively contribute to a broader dialogue about the planet's future.

But our efforts don’t stop at conversation; they are embedded in every aspect of our operations.

Every product associated with Green Man, from merchandise to operational materials, reflects our environmental commitment. Whether that’s our merchandise, which is made with environmentally conscious materials and supports ethical organisations, or our festival programmes, which are produced from 100% recyclable materials, we ensure that every element is as eco-friendly as possible.

We have deliberately avoided corporate sponsorship to maintain the integrity of our local partnerships. This decision fosters a circular economy that benefits the local community directly. By sourcing food, drinks and materials locally, we minimise our carbon footprint and support the local economy, enhancing the sustainability of our festival.

Transportation is also a significant aspect of our sustainability agenda. We’ve established a robust transport system that includes free shuttles and encourages the use of trains and bicycles. Our efforts have led to reduced traffic and emissions, showing that eco-friendly transport is not only viable but preferable.

Green Man has also prohibited single-use plastics since 2006. Our commitment has set a standard, evidenced by the fact that plastic straws have never been used and the use of compostable or reusable alternatives throughout the festival grounds.

All our energy needs are met through renewable sources, including solar power and hydrogenated vegetable oil, decreasing emissions from our operations. Our pioneering use of compostable toilets and reusable cups has not only reduced waste but has also inspired other festivals and events across the UK to adopt similar practices.

In every aspect, Green Man Festival demonstrates that a sustainable festival is not only possible but also preferable. We show thousands of attendees each year that there are viable alternatives to traditional practices, providing them with ideas and inspirations they can take back to their communities.

My hope is that we can continue to adopt even more sustainable practices and that these innovations will ripple out, encouraging more widespread adoption of sustainable practices in festivals and beyond.
