£11 Million Boost to Welsh Economy with A4119 Upgrades

A stretch of the A4119 in South Wales is overcapacity and congested. Over £11 million from the Levelling Up Fund will support improvements to benefit:

  • pedestrians
  • motorists
  • cyclists

A4119 upgrades to expand regional connections

The A4119 is a vital link to the M4 and the Rhondda Valleys. The stretch of road will be converted into a dual carriageway between the:

  • South Wales Fire and Rescue Service roundabout
  • Coed-Ely roundabout

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, and cabinet member for Infrastructure and Investment, said:

The dualling scheme is a priority investment to significantly improve local connectivity to the strategic Rhondda Gateway region, by improving traffic flow in this busy commuter area. It will unlock the former colliery site, Parc Coed-Elái, which is the location of the council’s new modern business unit, with the wider site being developed by Welsh Government. The scheme will also improve active travel provision for the local community at Coed-Ely.

Improvements to support sustainable travel

Cyclists and pedestrians will also benefit.

There will be:

a new route along the west of the carriageway, from Coed-Ely Roundabout to Llantrisant Business Park

  • a new bridge south of Coed-Ely roundabout to encourage commuters to choose walking or cycling

The works are expected to help create thousands of new jobs by improving access to:

  • key development sites
  • Cardiff
