Wales Outpacing UK Average in Key Job Roles

Wales is outpacing the national average in its share of job titles for a range of roles including registered nurses, team leaders and electricians.

Compared to the UK average, the share of job postings in Wales is 75% higher for registered nurse roles, 29% higher for team leaders and 42% higher for electricians, according to new data from Indeed. The surge in demand offers strong earning potential and new opportunities for those considering a career move, retraining, or relocating to the region, the firm said.

Medical professionals seeking opportunities in Wales can expect competitive salaries. The average base salary for registered nurses was £38,921, for team leaders in the same area it was £32,898, and for electricians, £37,037.

Other job titles with a higher share of postings in Wales than the UK include frontline management roles, with job titles such as assistant manager, deputy manager, and shift manager. This trend could point to a maturing labour market in Wales, where businesses are investing in leadership at the operational level to support expansion and service delivery, Indeed said.

Matt Burney, Senior Strategic Advisor at Indeed, said:

“The labour market varies hugely across the UK, and what’s growing in Scotland might be shrinking in Wales. Jobseekers can make more informed career choices by knowing which roles are growing locally and how they align with the region’s demographics and industries.”

The momentum may reflect broader trends in decentralising high-skill hiring, supported by targeted investment in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, and life sciences sectors, the firm suggested. Initiatives such as the Celtic Freeport and the South Wales Industrial Cluster create hubs for innovation and green growth, widening access to high-value opportunities across the region.

While traditionally many people faced barriers when switching careers or moving into new roles, hiring practices are evolving all over the UK. Skills-first hiring is gaining momentum, with real-world abilities now valued more than formal qualifications, Indeed said.

A 2025 survey from Indeed found that 51% of UK hiring managers prioritise skills over degrees. Indeed’s Hiring Lab data found only 14% of UK job ads require formal education, and just 3.7% ask for a bachelor’s degree, making career moves or opportunities possible without specific education or experience in the same role.
