As we are heading into the new year, one of the most common topics we are all thinking about is saving money and improving our environment. In light of the current cost of living situation, energy is a big money-taking factor, therefore it’s incredibly important we are aware of how to save unnecessary costs and introduce more sustainable ways of working.

John Walsh, Sales Director at EcoSync shares some advice on how you, as a business or boss, can train and encourage your employees to save energy in the workplace.

“A large part of saving energy in the workplace stems from educating employees on the importance of good energy practices. Without gaining the buy-in of your workforce, it’s almost impossible to make inroads in reducing your energy bills and transitioning to more sustainable ways of working.

The first thing we recommend here is to assign the role of Energy Champion to a senior member of your team. They’ll be responsible for driving change and reporting on progress, as well as communicating energy policies to other members of staff and relevant third parties.

Once you have your Energy Champion, you can start thinking about practical changes and improvements. To help with this, performing an energy audit can help you to get a picture of how energy is currently being used across your premises, which is great for identifying any stand-out energy offenders and bad habits that need addressing.

From there, it’s all about making the appropriate adjustments to curb energy use. Place friendly reminders around the office as a way to gradually instil good energy habits into your workforce, and consider upgrading equipment to show that you’re serious about cutting back and becoming more sustainable.

A final point to consider is the need for energy innovation and bright ideas on how to operate more sustainably. Encourage your staff to put forward suggestions on how the business can better harness modern technology to become more energy efficient; a good idea could be all it takes to get you moving in the right direction.”
