Rio’s master plan proposal for Cardiff’s Atlantic Wharf regeneration scheme has recently achieved planning approval by Cardiff Council’s Planning Committee.

The move comes two decades after the construction of the Cardiff Bay barrage, the catalyst for the £2bn regeneration of the old docklands, which included the development of the £120m landmark building, Wales Millennium Centre, that sits at the heart of Roald Dahl Plas and the iconic Senedd building.

The 33.4 acre prime development scheme represents the next phase of the development of Cardiff Bay, its links to the city centre, including the regeneration of Butetown.

Appointed by Robertson and Cardiff Council, Rio’s approved design proposal for the vibrant mixed-use development is guided by Cardiff Council’s carbon neutral strategy and developed to accommodate both the Cycle Superhighway and Metrolink plans in support of Cardiff Council’s One Planet City goal to achieve a carbon-neutral city by 2030.

Delivering the master plan will contribute to achieving the ambitions of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and make efficient use of land to provide a rich and dynamic urban environment that is distinctive and attractive.

‘The Atlantic Wharf Butetown development represents one of the largest regeneration projects in Wales and will have significant, positive and lasting impacts on our economy and communities locally.’ Councillor Russell Goodway.

Key ambitions include improvements to the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales by contributing to the creation of a low-carbon society and the provision of attractive, viable, safe and well-connected communities.

Alongside the strategic vision of developing Cardiff Bay as Wales’ premier tourist and leisure destination, Cardiff Council is also proposing several landmark destinations, including the addition of cultural/heritage buildings promoting and educating visitors about Welsh history.
