A landmark development in Cardiff city centre has been named the UK’s best commercial property scheme in the prestigious RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards Grand Final.
One Central Square – a winner in the RICS Awards, Wales earlier this year – provides around 135,000 sq ft of much-needed Grade A office space in the capital.
Completed in March 2016 and fully let within six months, the facility raises the bar for office design in Wales. It was designed by Rio Architects for Rightacres Property Co. The project team also included Willmott Dixon Construction.
A total 71,000 sq ft of One Central Square is occupied by MotoNovo Finance, following its relocation to larger premises in preparation for ambitious expansion plans. The company occupies four floors of the building with offices that encompass video conferencing facilities, intelligent meeting rooms, pool tables, a state-of-the-art bar, and stunning panoramic views of the capital.
RICS judges praised the project team for creating a ‘BREAAM excellent’ building that has proved exceptionally popular with tenants, whilst acting as a catalyst for further development in and around the area, which will further enhance Cardiff as a commercial destination.
In a great night for Wales’s built environment, Urban Village on High Street, Swansea was also Highly Commended in the Regeneration category.
Urban Village was a residential-led project, designed to provide ‘city living’ accommodation, as well as offering high-quality office space to attract businesses to the area. It was designed by Coastal Housing Group to tackle the urban decline in Swansea High Street.
The project team for Urban Village also included ChandlerKBS, Holder Mathias, and R&M Williams.
The project teams for the two schemes collected their accolades at a gala event at the InterContinental London, Park Lane Hotel on 2 November. The event was hosted by BBC Breakfast News and Sport Anchor, Dan Walker.
The six category winners from this year’s RICS Awards, Wales were automatically entered into the RICS Awards Grand Final, where they competed against over 95 regional winners for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
