Bridgend County Borough Council has awarded funding towards two new road safety improvement projects between Llangynwyd and Maesteg, and the refurbishment of a tired patch of land in Pyle.

Llangynwyd Middle Community Council is receiving £7,000 towards the £14,000 cost of erecting four new speed awareness signs along the A4063 through Llangynwyd and Cwmfelin.

The flashing signs will remind drivers to drive within the 30mph speed limit.

A further £20,000 is also being awarded by Bridgend County Borough Council to Maesteg Town Council so that the Llynfi Valley cycling route can be extended from Cwmdu Road in Maesteg to Cwmfelin.

The improvements to the off-road link will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists in Cwmfelin and Garth to travel between their homes and Maesteg town centre, and will also connect them with Maesteg Comprehensive School. The total cost of the scheme will be approximately £58,000.

The two road safety schemes are among several put forward by town and community councils that were approved for funding by Cabinet Members from Bridgend County Borough Council at their most recent meeting.

Other schemes awarded funding include Pyle Community Council’s proposal to refurbish Pandy Crescent in Pyle. Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to award £20,000 towards the £58,000 cost of turning a tired space into a vibrant park and play area.

The area will be landscaped with the planting of shrubs, trees, flowers and lawns. The children’s play area will be revitalised, and new railings will be installed around its perimeter. A new footpath will also be constructed around the park and new benches will be put in place too.

Another award will see Cefn Cribwr Community Council receive £16,000 towards the £32,000 cost of bringing Bedford Close in Cefn Cribwr to an adoptable highway standard.

Each of the Town and Community Councils involved have to meet at least 50 per cent of the project costs.
