Four Years in a Row – USW Named Cyber University of the Year 2022

At The National Cyber Awards held last month in London, USW was joint winner of the accolade alongside the University of Wolverhampton, having been victorious in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The awards recognise those who are committed to cyber innovation, cyber crime reduction, and protecting citizens online.

Sharan Johnstone, USW’s Head of Cyber Security said:

“We are extremely proud to have won this award for the fourth consecutive year, particularly against such strong contenders in our category.

“This past year has, again, been very challenging for Higher Education, our students, and our staff, as we transitioned our learners back to campus. I’m incredibly proud and privileged to lead a team that has still been able to contribute to cyber education, outreach, and research in the UK, and to be recognised for the work we do with our students, industry, and our wider communities.

“Team Cyber at USW consists of a group of very dedicated professionals, based at Newport and Treforest, who share a vision to develop graduates with cutting-edge skills and we nurture future talent through our team at the National Digital Exploitation Centre in Ebbw Vale.

“In 2022 we have also launched of our Community Cyber Clinic, where our students provide free cyber advice to our communities.

“Our gold standard Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Education continues to go from strength to strength, with exciting new community programmes launching shortly.

“We have three National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) certified degree programmes running at our Treforest campus, and hope to add to that tally having submitted an application for our new Newport-based MSc Applied Cyber Security to the NCSC for certification consideration.

“Winning this award for the fourth year in a row really does confirm that we are among the best places in the country to study cyber security.”

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss MP added:

“The National Cyber Awards are a wonderful way to reward, celebrate, and showcase the work of those who are committed to keep us safe. Please pass on my warmest congratulations to the winners who are an inspiration to everyone across the sector who wish to protect others.”
