Cardiff-based Recruitment Firm Celebrates £1.4m Turnover in First Year

LINKS Recruitment Group, the specialist resource consultancy established in August 2017, has recorded an impressive turnover of £1.4m in just its first year of trading – leading the company to reinvest in its operations with new 1,000sq ft offices at Caron House, Cardiff Gate, expand the team with the recent appointment of two additional members and projected revenue target of £3.2m in 2018/2019.

Launched with no investment by founding directors Daniel Puttick and Tiffany Briggs, the success achieved by LINKS Recruitment Group has been in spite of financial challenges faced in the early months of trading. After customer Palmer and Harvey went into liquidation last November, LINKS suffered a bad debt of £61k and some tough decisions had to be made as to how the business could move forward.

Daniel explains:

“It was a massive hit that came just before Christmas. We made sure the staff got paid, which inevitably left us as a new business with a huge cash hole. The easy thing to do would have been to shut up shop… but that’s not what we’re about. We have a vision to build a sustainable business, through carefully managed growth and an ethical approach to client management. So, we rolled up our sleeves and worked on clearing the monies owed.”

LINKS Recruitment Group successfully cleared the bad debt in just three months, enabling the company to refocus its efforts on growing the business, creating new jobs and driving forward a new standard for recruitment consultancy – including investment in digital infrastructure.

“We’ve invested £25k in the office move which has seen our footprint increase from just 200sq ft to 1,000sq ft. And because communications are the backbone of our business – we also made strategic investment in a dedicated lease line for broadband along with cloud-based telecoms and bespoke online platforms for client management,” continued Daniel.

The investment LINKS Recruitment Group is making in digital platforms is continuing with the development of a bespoke client/candidate web portal that Daniel believes will deliver efficiencies all round:

“We’ve just approved plans to create an advanced client interaction portal that will dramatically improve efficiencies for our customers along with strengthening our internal infrastructure. We’ll need to reinvest approximately £10,000 but see this as essential for providing customers with the best experience possible.”

While LINKS Recruitment Group launched during a year that saw the total number of UK recruitment agencies at a record-high of 27,788 (Source: online recruitment resource, Onrec), Daniel and Tiffany have worked hard to establish a culture within a competitive industry which moves the conversation away from CVs and back towards a true consultative approach.

“We’re passionate about what we do. And while that might sound like a cliché, the evidence of our passion is shining through by our business performance. For us, candidates and customers are all clients, and everyone can expect the same high levels of responsiveness when it comes to communication. By putting people first – and our responsibility as consultants first – we are seeing this pull through in terms of new contracts and a high level of retention.

“At LINKS Recruitment Group, we believe that our fantastic team and hands on approach enables us to deliver an exceptional customer experience. We are dedicated to providing permanent, temporary and contractor recruitment services, supporting the industry in the UK and farther afield as well as building lasting partnerships with our clients,” comments Tiffany.

For Daniel, who left school with no GSCEs, the mantra ‘recruit for attitude, train for skill’ is one which guides his own approach to business development:

“There are obviously roles out there that require pre-defined skills, but I still maintain that you can’t teach attitude. In our own team development, we are looking for people who care and want to learn – we want to build a culture where the team love coming to work and want to be part of building a sustainable business that has long term career opportunities,” concludes Daniel.

LINKS Recruitment Group is now an eight-strong team with plans to recruit a further two members of staff before August 2019.
