Neath Port Talbot Council has been given Welsh Government Transport Grants of more than £1.6m this year to help maintain and improve the County Borough’s roads, paths and cycle routes.

The grants have come from a variety of funds including the Local Transport Fund, Local Transport Network Fund, Active Travel Fund, Road Safety Capital Fund, Road Safety Revenue Fund and the Safe Routes in Communities project.

 Neath Port Talbot Council Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering Cllr Ted Latham said:

“We’re having a busy time improving, maintaining and updating our transport system.

“Some of the activity will see new intelligent traffic lights to keep traffic flowing as freely as possible and safety improvements at key locations in the County Borough.”

Here are the 2019/20 Welsh Government Transport Grants for Neath Port Talbot Council:

Local Transport Fund:

Cadoxton Highway Improvements – Phase 2, £ 150,000 (This will involve a section of road which is heavily congested especially during the rush hour. The scheme will look to widen the road, allowing the construction of two left turn lanes, improving traffic flow).

Local Transport Network Fund:

NPT Junction Improvements Neath, Phase 2 – (“Intelligent traffic lights” which have been put in place in Neath’s town centre along with traffic flow monitors) £ 330,000.

Active Travel Fund:

Active Travel Design Development – £319,000 (Designing and planning Active Travel Routes).

Road Safety Capitol Fund:

A474 Cwmgors To Pontardawe  – £185,000 (A series of road safety measures including road re-surfacing, signage and a “Dragon’s teeth” traffic calming initiative).

A 20mph zone in the Melyn area and Road Safety measures at Hillside, Dan-y-Graig and Old Road, Neath – £222,000

Road Safety Revenue:

A total of £ 76,400 – (The money will help continue the Councils education and training courses in relation to driving and road safety).

Safe Routes in Communities:

Ystalyfera Community Scheme – £333,000 (The scheme involves the creation of a 20mph zone in a residential area of Ystalyfera near a new school).
