New Programme to Bring AI and Cyber Graduate Talent into Welsh SMEs

By Skills & Workforce · 3 Sep 2026 · 2 min read

Businesses across Wales are being invited to harness the next generation of AI and cyber talent through Tech Talent Cymru, a new graduate placement programme supported by funding from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Participating SMEs will receive more than £3,000 towards salary costs during the placement, helping them access specialist skills while giving graduates a meaningful first step into the technology sector.

Delivered by Darogan, Tech Talent Cymru connects Welsh SMEs with STEM graduates who have developed an understanding of artificial intelligence and cyber security through their university degrees. Graduates will also receive dedicated training before joining a business, alongside mentoring throughout the programme, enabling them to work on real projects from day one while continuing to receive support during their placement.

For employers, the programme offers an affordable way to bring new digital capability into the business and support digital transformation projects that many SMEs simply do not have the time or resources to tackle.

Owain James, founder of Darogan, said:

“There is a lot of conversation about AI replacing jobs, particularly for young people entering the workplace. Those concerns are real, but there is another crucial conversation to be had: AI is also creating a need for new skills. Businesses need people who understand these technologies and, more importantly, know how to apply them in practical ways.

“Tech Talent Cymru is about creating those opportunities. Graduates gain meaningful experience, while Welsh businesses gain fresh skills, new ideas and dedicated capacity to explore AI and strengthen cyber resilience.

“This is an investment in the future of both our businesses and our young people.”

Tech Talent Cymru will be officially launched at GradCon Cymru, Darogan’s annual graduate careers event, taking place at DEPOT Cardiff on 8 and 9 September. Businesses are encouraged to register their interest early so they can be matched with graduate talent best suited to their business needs.

For Welsh businesses, Tech Talent Cymru offers a practical way to access emerging AI and cyber skills without the cost of hiring specialist consultants or building new teams from scratch. For graduates, it provides the opportunity to build meaningful careers by helping businesses solve real-world challenges. By bringing the two together, the programme aims to strengthen Welsh businesses while helping talented graduates build their careers in Wales.
