Welsh Business Benefitting from Transport for Wales Opportunities

Contracts varying in value from thousands to millions of pounds are being brought to market by Transport for Wales (TfW), and Welsh business is already benefitting thanks to Sell2Wales, the Welsh Government’s information source and procurement portal.

Transport for Wales is responsible for delivering the Welsh Government’s vision of a high quality, safe, integrated, affordable and accessible transport network and Welsh businesses are playing a key part in making this a reality.

Caerphilly based, Bond Demolition Ltd has successfully won a contract to strip asbestos in buildings on the North side of the Garth Estate at Taffs Well, and leading South Wales engineering / construction companies Centregreat Rail Ltd and Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, along with UK organisations, have been successful in joining the Sustainable Transport Infrastructure Delivery Framework, valued at £700 million.

The framework created by Transport for Wales has brought together specialist rail civil contractors to provide engineering design, construction and maintenance services to enhance and maintain the rail services in Wales.

The scope of work in the framework will include:

  • Capital works to implement the South Wales Metro
  • Design and implementation of enhancements of the rail network in Wales and its borders with England
  • Design and development of transport interchange between rail and other transport modes
  • Ancillary works to stations, interchanges, carparks, roads and paths and other general construction work associated with rail enhancement / maintenance

Along with indigenous Welsh-based companies, many UK organisations on the framework also have offices in Wales including, Idom Merebrook, Costain Ltd, WSP, BAM NUTTALL Ltd, Atkins Ltd and Keltbray Ltd. Transport for Wales will also be seeking support from SMEs throughout Wales and will therefore be awarding additional contracts through Sell2Wales, outside of the framework.

Sell2Wales is part of Business Wales, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and supports the sustainable growth of small and medium-size enterprises across the country by offering access to information, guidance and business support.

In 2018, Sell2Wales announced it had reached a record landmark, with 22,000 contracts being secured through its portal. With more than £6bn worth of contracts being advertised through the platform every year, Welsh SMEs are being encouraged to sign up to the platform to secure new business opportunities.
