A team of dedicated volunteers from Openreach swapped their hard hats and ladders for walking boots as they successfully completed their own version of Three Peaks Challenge in Wales, raising an impressive £1,000 in support of the Wales Air Ambulance.

More than 30 Openreach engineers from across Wales recently embarked on the gruelling expedition to conquer the three highest peaks in Wales—Yr Wyddfa, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan. With groups of engineers all starting at the base of each peak at the same time they took on the challenge – and the summer heat – to scale a combined elevation of over 3,000 meters.

The objective behind this extraordinary feat was to raise funds for the vital services provided by the Charity. With every step they took, the Openreach volunteers were driven by the knowledge that their efforts would directly contribute to saving lives and providing emergency critical medical care across the region.

Shaun White, Senior Area Manager for Wales, Openreach, said:

“We are immensely proud of our team's accomplishment in completing the Three Peaks Challenge.”

“Wales Air Ambulance provides an invaluable service to the people of Wales and as an organisation we’re delighted to do our bit in helping raise some money for such a great cause while also getting a chance to come together as a team outside work and see some of the incredible beauty of Wales.”

“Both my colleagues Sarah Buxton and Rhys Thomas have done a fantastic job in organising this event which has helped raise funds to go towards supporting the life-saving efforts of the Charity.”

The Openreach volunteers have already received great support from colleagues, friends, and family raising a combined total of more than £1000 so far. Further donation can be made here.

Laura Coyne, Wales Air Ambulance Community Fundraiser said:

“We are truly grateful to the members of Openreach in Wales who chose to support us and take on this challenge. To climb three mountains in one day is no small task and we thank all of those who took part and raised vital funds for our service.

“Your tremendous donation will enable us to continue serving the people of Wales and saving lives, by air or by road. Diolch yn fawr.”

The money raised will directly benefit the air ambulance service, enabling them to continue their vital work of providing rapid response and emergency medical care in Wales.

About Openreach in Wales

Openreach is on track to reach 25 million UK homes and businesses with access to Full Fibre ultrafast broadband and has already reached nearly 700,000 properties across Wales.

With a workforce of around 2,300 in Wales, Openreach already employs the nation’s largest team of telecoms engineers and professionals.

Across Wales more than 195,000 homes and businesses have already ordered a full fibre service from a range of retail service providers using the Openreach network. But this means that thousands more could be benefiting from some of the fastest, most reliable broadband connections in Europe and have yet to upgrade.

Recent research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) highlighted the clear economic benefits of connecting everyone in Wales to full fibre. It estimated this would create a £2 billion boost to the Welsh economy.

This short video explains what Full Fibre technology is and you can find out more about our Fibre First programme, latest availability and local plans here.
