One of British TV comedy’s most beloved figures – Only Fools and Horses star John Challis, AKA Boycie – is rooting for Swansea in its UK City of Culture 2021 bid saying, “You know it makes sense!”
A winning bid would be cushty for the city, and the actor, who starred in Swansea’s pantomime production of Peter Pan back in 2001, has added his voice – not to mention that machine-gun laugh – to the campaign, by recording a heartfelt video message.
“I remember playing Captain Hook at Swansea Grand many years ago. I’ve got great fond memories of the place, plus my friend and colleague, Tony Maudlsey, will be elegantly gracing the stage at this year’s panto, so I’ve decided to throw my weight behind back Swansea’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021. Come on Swansea, you can do this. You know it makes sense!”
Local legend, Swansea Sound presenter and part of the Swansea 2021 team, Kevin Johns, said:
“I’m pleased as punch that John Challis is backing Swansea’s UK City of Culture 2021 bid – I think it’s triffic. We had a great time together in panto and I know he has fond memories of our great city.
“Of course, Swansea 2021 can boast several more cultural hot-spots than 1980s Peckham, and we are fully expecting John to complete several victory laps in the Trotter’s Reliant Robin if Swansea is successful. So here’s hoping for the right result in December.”
