This week, we at Business News Wales were thrilled to interview Matt Hyde, Managing Director of Finance Awards Wales.
With a career spanning construction, PR and Financial Recruitment, Matt’s experience hinges around one thing – building great relationships. Bringing together his passion for connecting people, with a strong contact base in finance and accounting, Finance Awards Wales is his brainchild to promote and celebrate talented finance professionals in Wales.
Tell us about the Awards?
Finance Awards Wales are designed to recognise, celebrate and invest in the talented Finance professionals in Wales. Nominations have been invited for 10 categories, ranging from individual to team awards. Our awards ceremony, held on 20 April in City Hall will see us gather together and award the very best of the best. It’s going to be a great evening.
What was the inspiration behind Finance Awards Wales?
Whilst sitting on a beach in the Caribbean! I was frustrated at loosing great financial talent to Bristol and London and at times hearing the misconception that there are better finance professionals outside of Wales so wanted a vehicle that would recognise the talent pool we have in Wales and promote it.
I ran the idea passed the team at Recruit 121 Finance & Accounting who immediately got on board and here we are today less than 12 months later!
What has the response been like?
It may be our first year, but the response has been phenomenal. We’ve had nominations from across Wales and our judging panel – which is an impressive line up of finance and business specialists – have had the tough job of agreeing the winning nominations. No spoilers – I haven’t even got the final list. We’ll have to wait until the ceremony to find out the winners. We’ve also been delighted at the big name sponsors who have come on board. It means a lot when other financial institutions are prepared to invest in this story too.
What do you hope the Awards will achieve?
Our Finance professionals are the trusted backbone of business in Wales and very often they’re the unsung heroes of the workforce. The finance industry is growing at a rapid pace in Wales and the awards are designed to celebrate that fact, recognise what experience we have out there currently and show a strong investment in future talent.
I’d like to see Finance Awards Wales as one of the highlights of the business calendar in Wales. There are some brilliant awards out there, but this one puts finance professionals at its heart and show how vital they are to the economy. It would be fantastic to see the development of the teams and individuals who win, for instance, one of our categories is Young Finance Director of the Year and another is Rising Star of the Year. Who knows where we will see these faces in the future as their careers progress.
Who’s on your table?
I’ll be spending the evening with our major sponsors Judges, those shortlisted, all those that are there to support the awards, Che Hookings and Emma Peterson of Recruit 121 and of course my wife (Claire) – she’s lived and breathed every word of these awards for the last 10 months, so the least I can do is pour her champagne…
