Ten of Wales’ top product and service designers, developers and manufacturers will be going head to head with some of the foremost UK manufacturers in Liverpool on June 17th to see if they have done enough to secure a UK “Made in…” Award.
The companies will compete in eight categories for a coveted Made in the UK Award as part of Manufacturing Week during the International Festival of Business.
The companies representing Wales include:

- G.O.S Tool & Engineering Services
- Magor Design
They will be competing against winners from 10 regions across the UK. Amongst the UK finalists are Jaguar Land Rover, Airbus, Fracino, Clipper Teas, Karro Foods, Acorn Stairlifts and Evoke Creative. The shortlisteds represent some of the top players in terms of innovation, export and technical expertise according to the panel of judges.
Hoping to clinch the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation/ Creative Design Award are Asset International (Innovation), G.O.S Tool & Engineering Services (Creative Design) and FAUN Trackway (New Product).
Asset International manufactures Weholite HDPE plastic from its headquarters in Newport. The product is then used in drainage and water management projects across the UK and further afield.
G.O.S Tool & Engineering Services based in Blaenavon has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of specialist handling and conveying equipment including stainless steel systems for the food and pharmaceutical markets. The company also specialises in the manufacture of coil handling systems for all types of steel and paper processing markets, including gantry cranes and coil racks.
FAUN Trackway, based on the Isle of Anglesey, developed a one of a kind “pop-up helipad” – a standalone, custom-fitted container which holds all the equipment and tools necessary for military, humanitarian and relief personnel to build a helicopter landing mat and then support helicopter operations.
Welsh firms in the running for the Advanced Manufacturer / Technology Award include Blackwood Embedded Solutions and IQE.
Blackwood Embedded Solutions, based in Caerphilly, designs software and hardware used in a number of high-tech products across the medical, retail and security industries. In recent months the company has received a number of new orders including from Scandinavia and is in active discussions with a US company for the development of a revolutionary medical product.
St Mellons-based IQE manufactures compound semiconductors used to power everything from smart phones to cars and is behind the first semiconductor cluster in Wales.
Competing for the Export Award in association with UKTI is BBI Solutions. The business, that has its headquarters in Cardiff, is a leading expert in immunoassay development and manufacturing services, and provides an extensive portfolio of products and technologies to the global diagnostic and pharmaceutical markets.
Making the shortlist for the fiercely competitive Food and Drink Award is Calbee whilst Flightweight will be going head-to-head for the Green Manufacturer / Sustainable Manufacturer Award.
The Made in the UK Awards follows the Made in the UK Conference held at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool. The Conference, which is free to attend but requires registration, will provide insights on topics as diverse as advanced textiles, driverless cars, rail, big data and life sciences.
