A group of Year 11 Triple Science pupils from St Illtyds Catholic High School based in Rumney, made a visit to Cansford Laboratories in Pentwyn this week to learn about the world of drug testing.

Cansford Lab’s drug and alcohol testing services are used by family courts, employers, clinics, schools and government bodies to identify patterns of use in individuals. The results play a critical part in the decision-making process about a person’s integrity, suitability and reliability in a range of situations, from accommodation to child welfare.

For students looking to go to University to study science, this trip was an extremely exciting opportunity as they would be given behind the scenes access to the most intricate forms of drug testing.

Kim Bagley, Operations Director at Cansford Laboratories said:

“We were delighted to welcome the pupils of St Illtyds Catholic High School, Cansford are keen to engage with the local community, especially schools. We believe explaining what we do and allowing students to experience what working in a lab involves is crucial to inspire scientists of the future.”

She added:

“We hope that by experiencing first-hand the impact our work has on people, it will motivate them to pursue a career within this field and help them make a real difference too.”

By sharing their findings in a friendly and straight forward way, Cansford Labs were able to engage the pupils and highlight how the work that they do can be life changing.

Year 11 Pupil Matthew Guo said:

“The visit to Cansford Laboratories was enjoyable and taught us a lot about how the tests are performed. The staff were friendly while the lab was clean and spacious. This made the visit better than expected and every minute was worthwhile.”

Luisa May, CFS Coordinator at St Illtyds added:

“We are incredibly thankful to Cansford Labs for inviting us to visit as part of the students Triple Science program. It proved to be a fascinating visit and our budding scientists left inspired with further questions about the industry, the visit was thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils.”
