The Welsh Start up Making Prosthetic Legs Cool

The story behind Limb-Art, the North Wales-based manufacturer, begun on the 21st June 1982.

That was the day, following a car accident, that Limb-Art founder Mark Williams lost his leg.

He describes the next 8 years as a whirlwind as he went from a shy 10-year-old boy, into a ‘super-confident’ athlete winning medals in the pool at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics and 1989 Miami World Championships.

Having found that trousers and prosthetic legs don’t always go well together he made his own covers for his leg. One day in 2017 a small child approached him in a local supermarket wanting to tell me how “cool” his leg looked (a bright green cover with flashing LED lights) At this point he decided it was time to “give something back.” Pulling together a team of experts to make the covers on a bigger scale, the aim was to help those with prosthetic legs “Stand Out and Stand Proud”.

The journey for Limb-art was not without some challenges though, with both directors of the company lacking experience in the manufacturing. Overcoming these, the firm was awarded Manufacturing Start-up of the Year at the Wales Start-Up Awards.

Speaking on the win, Mark Williams commented;

“Winning the Wales Manufacturing Start-up of the year shows is that not only is Limb-art recognised as the BEST by the judges and our peers but highlights to us that we are ready and positioned to take the business globally, raising the confidence of amputees whilst at the same time flying the flag for Wales”
