A Gwynedd-based distillery has received a major boost after securing a deal to put its products on the shelves of Tesco stores across Wales.

Aber Falls distillery, named after the nearby waterfall, uses locally-grown ingredients to create its high-quality spirits.

It will now see its Dry and Orange Marmalade gins stocked in Tesco stores across the nation. The business secured the listing after the two products were trialled in Tesco stores over the Christmas period and proved a hit with shoppers.

Matt Downes, Tesco’s buying manager for Wales, visited the distillery to mark new listing. Following the success of the brand over the Christmas period he is expecting to see a good level of demand for the two lines in Tesco’s Welsh stores.

“We’re always on the look-out for top quality local products to stock in our Welsh stores,” he said. “We knew that our customers wanted to see Welsh products strongly represented on the shelves of our beer, wines and spirits aisles and the gin category has grown significantly across the UK in recent times.

“To meet that demand we were keen to expand our Welsh gin lines and we trialled Aber Falls’ dry gin and marmalade gin in our stores over the Christmas period. The response from customers was very promising and on the back of that, both of those lines have won a year-round listing on the shelves of our largest stores across Wales.”

Aber Falls distillery is North Wales’ first distillery for more than 100 years and is one of only a handful of distilleries in Wales.  Located within a stone’s throw of Rhaeadr Fawr, the famous Aber Falls waterfall, the brand’s products are distilled, bottled and matured in the distillery, using specially crafted Welsh ingredients from the surrounding area.

James Wright, managing director at Aber Falls Distillery, said the listing with Tesco would have a significant impact on the business, bringing its products to the attention of even more consumers.

“We’re absolutely delighted with our Tesco listing and the increased consumer interest in our brand,” he said. “It’ll be a real privilege to bring some of the best produce North Wales has to offer to people across the country.

“I think the marmalade gin will be a particular favourite to satisfy Wales’ diversifying culinary tastes. It has a refined balance of sweet and bitter orange flavours, with the pine flavour of juniper providing a citrusy hit with a warming aftertaste, guaranteed to tickle taste buds. We can’t wait to provide our local produce to consumers across Wales just in time for summer!”

Aber Falls is just the latest in a series of leading producers to see their products stocked in the beer, wines and spirits aisles of Tesco stores. They join Glamorgan Brewery and Boss Brewing among the brands that have secured Tesco listings in the chain’s Welsh supermarkets.
