Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) has opened its search for the latest round of talented applicants to join its Higher Apprenticeship Scheme. The Pencoed-based facility, which produces HD and 4K broadcast equipment for worldwide distribution, launches the programme for the tenth consecutive year.

The scheme is coordinated by the company’s on-site Academy and will enable its participants to gain invaluable work experience at one of the world’s leading manufacturing sites, while they also work to gain a Higher Apprenticeship Qualification such as HNC/HND or degree qualifications.

Sony UK TEC is looking for apprentice applications within the field of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, and Business Support. Applicants will be invited to an open event, and those who are successful will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of departments, to enable them to decide where their interests and skills are best suited.

Apprentices will be exposed to the production of high-end broadcast cameras, innovative products such as the Raspberry Pi and Smart IoT, and the advancement in technologies such as big data, AI connected systems, advanced robotics, and cutting-edge automation.

So far, over 40 apprentices have taken part in the successful scheme since its inception, with all participants praising its diverse offering.

Kevin Edwards, General Manager for Engineering, said:

“Apprenticeship programmes are an essential commitment for an organisation dependent on technology and knowledge.

“Our enthusiastic approach to delivering our apprenticeship scheme provides future specialists across a variety of disciplines.

“We leverage the advantage of mixing high-level academic courses with working alongside our innovative and highly skilled team at Pencoed.

“We are particularly proud of our role in developing leaders for our next generation, supporting our ever-diversifying operation.

“It’s an amazing time to be part of the Sony family, the ability to adapt, to innovate and to embrace new technologies has never been so prominent given the challenges that we have faced over the past two years. This is testimony to the agile, highly skilled and committed workforce that we have at Sony Pencoed, a workforce which we will continue to invest in, to develop and build upon these attributes.

“Our apprenticeships are an integral part in supporting this, developing future talent, inspiring future leaders and specialists to explore and push the boundaries of the many exciting technological opportunities that lay ahead.”

To apply for a place in the scheme, applicants must have a minimum of five GCSEs, including a B or above in Mathematics, and Cs or above in Science and English. Applications close at midnight on 28 February, with assessments due to take place shortly after.

Candidates must complete an application form and email it to [email protected], along with a cover letter and CV.
