A planning application has been submitted to convert an office building in central Barry into social housing accommodation.
The three-storey 17,297 sq ft Provincial House office block in Kendrick Road has been purchased by SGR Real Estate. If its planning application is approved, with a decision expected imminently, Kestrel Construction will convert the building into 32 apartments on behalf of social housing provider Hafod.
Hafod is a group of not-for-profit companies that work together to provide housing, care and support services across South Wales.
Commercial property consultant Knight Frank handled the sale on behalf of the owners and Grace Shackell from Knight Frank’s Cardiff office said:
“The Vale of Glamorgan is lacking in development opportunities and when we invited best bids from the market there was a lot of interest and three clear bids. The property was not on the market for long and SGR succeeded with their unconditional offer.”
Kes Smith of Kestrel Construction said: “The town centre location is ideal for social housing use. We are confident we will be able to gain the necessary consents. The conversion programme is likely to take up to 18 months.”
