A pioneering collaboration led by the University of South Wales (USW) has delivered significant economic and innovation outcomes for the region.
The Academic-Industry Partnership (AIP) Programme – which also involved Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) – has supported 24 short-term collaborative R&D projects which helped businesses across South East Wales adopt new technologies, improve services, and enhance operational efficiency.
With funding support of up to £14,000 per project, and match funding from participating enterprises, the programme – which ran from March 2024 until March 2025 – enabled access to academic expertise which will continue to generate impact well beyond its duration.
Key outcomes of the programme include:
- 69 jobs created or retained
- £10 million in regional investment forecast
- £16 million in economic growth forecast within five years
- 21 new or improved products delivered
- 20 enterprises adopting new technologies or processes
- More than 260 individuals engaged from more than 150 organisations
The programme also delivered five business support events in partnership with further education institutions and the Open University in Wales. These provided free access to expert-led panels, industry insights, and networking opportunities across CCR’s five priority clusters: Compound Semiconductors, Cyber Security, Medtech, Fintech, and Creative Industries.
“This programme has demonstrated the power of collaboration between academia and industry to drive innovation, boost productivity, and create real economic value,” said Rhodri Ryland, External Engagement Manager.
“By connecting businesses with world-class research expertise, we’ve laid the groundwork for a more resilient and forward-looking regional economy.
“The Academic-Industry Partnership Programme has not only delivered immediate results but also established a strong foundation for future innovation-led growth across the region.”
One of the small businesses to benefit from the AIP Programme was The Social Work Way, which is run by Matthew Davies. The enterprise received support from the USW-based Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Emerging Technologies.
“Working with CEMET to develop the new app feature, Your Voice Your Words, has been an incredible experience. From the start, the team showed genuine passion for the project and a deep understanding of the app’s concept. They took the time to listen, ensuring every detail aligned with my vision,” he said.
“CEMET kept me informed every step of the way, providing regular updates and explaining processes in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. Their commitment to collaboration and innovation was evident throughout, and I felt supported and confident in their expertise. No question was a silly question.
“I am grateful for their dedication and professionalism, and I would highly recommend CEMET to anyone looking to develop technology solutions.”
