New Group Managing Director For Swansea-based International Engineering Firm

Swansea based International engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance company, Unit Birwelco, has welcomed a new Group Managing Director to the fold.

Mark Phillips, former Managing Director of CB&I, Shaw Group UK joins the company at a particularly exciting time.

MarkPhillipsUnit Birwelco, which works across oil and gas, petrochemical and power sectors, has recently launched a dedicated Power Services division, and the group has a real sense of focus regarding its future and its place within the industry, says Mr Phillips.

“These are interesting times particularly within the UK power sector. We are seeing continued growth in waste-to-energy, biomass and gas plants, but at the same time contraction within the engineering services sector supporting the construction and maintenance of these plants.

“Over the past few years Unit Birwelco has positioned itself impressively within a very challenging marketplace and is now very well placed to support this power sector growth.

“The Power Services division provides plant owners with a specialist repair and maintenance service backed up by process engineering design, manufacturing and fabrication. We can repair and maintain existing power plants and rapidly draw upon these other in-house capabilities when the work demands change and the scope increases.

“Equally, we can also offer a turnkey service for new power plants; from design, manufacturing, fabrication to installation and R&M activities.

“Unit Birwelco’s specialist repair and maintenance skills are some of the most highly-regarded in the UK and some of these skills are becoming a real rarity – particularly when it comes to the expertise required to repair some of the country’s older power plants.

“The Power Services division will complement the group’s current capabilities and provide a comprehensive 24/7, 365 day-a-year repair, maintenance and specialist engineering support service to UK power plants across waste to energy, biomass, gas, coal and combined heat and power facilities.

“With the business having also created a Major Projects division, focusing on complex multi-discipline projects, and offering a seamless, joined up service, I feel Unit Birwelco is exactly where it needs to be.

“By embarking on projects of the right size and fit for us as a company, we can continue to consolidate our strong position.”

Mr Phillips brings with him a wealth of experience as Managing Director and before that Finance Director at CB&I, Shaw Group UK. He is also Vice President of the Engineering Construction Industry Association.

“My new role within Unit Birwelco is also very much people-focussed. It is my priority to provide a clear vision for the group, strong leadership and good communication. Leading by example will motivate our teams, demonstrate the behaviours that lead to success and create an even more cohesive business.”
