Visitors to Pontypool Indoor Market can fight off the cold this winter with a selection of warming soups, homemade pies and pasties, and freshly baked bread.
Penrhiwgyngi Farm Bakery opened in December 2017 and is already proving a hit with customers, adding to the market’s existing food offer of oven baked jacket potatoes, home cooked meals, fresh meat, fish, and fruit and veg.
The bakery also sells a range of freshly made cakes, birthday cakes to order, and can offer a catering service. Owner Michelle Woolley will be familiar to many in the town as she traded at Pontypool’s outdoor market every Wednesday for three years. After a period of illness that stopped her trading for six months she decided that she no longer wanted to work outdoors and chose to make Pontypool her permanent home.
“I have traded at lots of different markets but I have always done best in Pontypool. The people here are so loyal – I was away from the outdoor market for some time due to illness and since I have moved into the indoor market lots of my customers have returned and said how pleased they are to see me back.
“I have also had a lot of support from the council and the other traders here. There are now lots of great food stalls in the market and I hope that together we can attract more customers so that everyone can benefit.”
The new bakery is just one of a number of new stalls that opened in the market in 2017. Visitors can now add rare and collectable teddy bears, luxury bath soaps, designer baby clothes, soft furnishings, jewellery and bespoke wood carvings to their shopping baskets.
Councillor Alan Jones, executive member for business, tourism, leisure and culture, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Penrhiwgyngi Farm Bakery and all the other traders that joined us in 2017 into the market. We now have a really diverse offer for shoppers especially if you are looking for a spot of lunch or unique gift.
“The market is a lovely, historical building and we are continuing to look for opportunities to increase its offer while also bringing new and interesting events to the town.”
In addition to the new stalls, the market also hosted a series of successful events in 2017 including pop-up cinemas and restaurants, comedy nights, and wedding and record fairs. A regular Foodie Thursday event on the first Thursday of every month, starts on Thursday 1 February.
