Leading supermarket chain, Morrisons, have just launched a search for the best food & drink suppliers in Wales. All types of food and drink are being sought, including fresh produce. Potential companies are invited to apply via an on line form. A chosen selection will then take part in a special buyers day to be held in Wales in June.
Morrisions will also be working with members of the Women’s Institutes in different localities to use their local knowledge and expertise to source and select the best suppliers within their area.
Rachel Kennedy from Morrisons said;
“We are looking for a wide range of suppliers. Some will be local suppliers able to supply just one or two stores, others could supply a large number. We will be holding the event in a community centre somewhere in Wales. Potential suppliers will set up their stalls and our buyers will come and meet them, talk to them and taste their produce.”
The company already sells produce like Welsh Lamb, Welsh Beef, Shirgar Butter and Colliers Cheese. Business owners Gareth and Falmai Roberts already know just what an opportunity gaining a listing in Morrisons can be. Their yoghurt business, Llaeth y Llan (Village Dairy) started with trading in their local Morrisons store in 2004. Sales grew steady, and by 2007, Llaeth y Llan were supplying Morrisons stores throughout Wales and the North West. Orders have increased 20% year on year. As a result, the dairy moved to a new 2,500 sq ft factory in 2016.
Gareth Roberts said;
“Morrisons has played a significant part in us achieving this growth. Supplying Morrisons throughout Wales and its bordering counties has considerably increased our product sales. It has also made our brand more available to more customers – thus strengthened our brand awareness.”
Closing date for applications is Friday 12 May, and meetings with buyers will take place during the week commencing 12 June.
