Showcasing the Best of Welsh Business

Mid Wales Farmhouse Wins Top Wales B&B Award from Trivago

A Mid Wales farmhouse located near the site where Llywelyn, the last native Prince of Wales, was killed in 1282, has been voted the best B&B in Wales and third best in the whole of the UK by hotel search website

The first Richard and Jane Davies knew about the annual trivago Awards was when they received an email notifying them that their home and business, Pwllgwilym Self-catering Holiday Cottages and B&B at Cilmery near Builth Wells, had been successful with a rating of 94.97.

The couple, who opened their farmhouse to B&B business seven years ago, have a carving of Prince Llywelyn standing guard over the cottages. An annual service to commemorate his death at a riverside site nearby in December 11, 1282 was held recently.

jane-davies-picGenerations of Richard’s family have lived Pwllgwilym for nearly 200 years and he and his wife, Jane, converted an old ‘L’-shaped farm barn into three cottages 10 years ago. At the time, Richard was running a building business employing 40 people when the recession hit and he needed to diversify.

He still has a small-scale building business but also runs Welsh Overland Safari – – an independent company offering unique overland guided tours of some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes in Wales.

Pwllgwilym is situated in the village of Cilmery, two miles from Builth Wells, surrounded by 62 acres of green farmland with outstanding scenery. The property is within walking distance of the local pub and train station and the Royal Welsh Showground, Elan Valley Dams and an excellent 18-hole golf course are all nearby.

“We are chuffed to win the award and it hasn’t really sunk in yet, to be honest,” said Jane. “We work hard to make our guests welcome and comfortable and it’s a nice way to begin the year.

“We have got three B&B rooms in the farmhouse as well as the self-catering cottages. Websites like trivago help to get people here from all over the world and we get a lot of repeat business from satisfied customers.

“We have recently welcomed guests from Saudi Arabia who arrived her by train and Richard took them on a guided tour with Welsh Overland Safari. We like to tell guests about the area and Richard is passionate about the area’s hidden gems.”

trivago uses more than 175 million aggregated hotel reviews and semantic analysis to determine the best-rated hotels and B&Bs in the UK. By analysing reviews aggregated from different sources across the web, trivago aims to make the awards accurate, comprehensive and impartial.

Johannes Thomas, managing director at trivago, said: “Our awards recognise those hoteliers and B&B businesses that deliver an exceptional experience to their guests and we are proud and delighted to award those achievements.”

Welsh Overland Safari is a member of MWT Cymru, an independent organisation that represents around 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Mid Wales.
