Former Real Radio and Evening Post MD Takes the Helm at Business News Wales


Business News Wales – one of the UK's fastest growing digital news channels – welcomes Tony Dowling as commercial Managing Director, who will work alongside founder and editor Mark Powney.

Tony has a wealth of senior experience within the Welsh media sector, having previously worked as the Managing Director at Real Radio and South West Wales Media, and publisher of the South Wales Evening Post.

Commenting on his appointment, Tony Dowling said;

Tony is an accomplished digital media executive with more than 10 years senior management experience.  His media career has so far spanned more than 25 years taking in local and regional press, regional and national commercial radio, news and entertainment web publishing and a global niche multi-platform music brand.

Tony also conceived and ran the hugely successful Online Influence conference (#Oiconf) in South Wales, which was endorsed by the Welsh Government as a powerful way to help SMEs understand the impact of the social web on their businesses.

Tony is an experienced business mentor and has held several trusteeships for the charities Homestart Monmouthshire and Austism Cymru.

Before taking the MDs role at Team Rock in London, Tony was lead on a digital project team at Local World (previously Northcliffe Media) where he worked to develop a collaboration with Welsh Government to run a ‘national’ hyper local network.

This came following a successful tenure as MD of South West Wales Publishing, a stable of daily and weekly newspapers, news and entertainment websites and a physical and online magazine portfolio.

Tony joined Northcliffe Media directly from Guardian Media Groups commercial radio division where he had been MD of the national commercial radio station ‘Real Radio Wales’ which won many awards and was regarded as one of the most successful national / regional commercial radio stations in the country, based on audience, revenue and profits.

He worked at GMG for a total of 15 years having previously been appointed Sales Director at the launch of the station.

In addition to his management roles Tony has consulted for several sales organisations across the country and gives talks on the subject of social media marketing and digital media. He has spoken extensively with the business management schools at Cardiff and Swansea Universities on the topic of digital media, the highly regarded ‘Lead On’ programme in Cardiff and also worked with the CMI backed Leading Wales Awards where he has been judging panel chair for the last four years.

With a lifelong interest in science Tony studied Physics and Philosophy at Swansea University after leaving school though in later years he also studied the CIM degree level advanced certificate in Marketing and Post Graduate Certificate in Marketing. His current areas of informal study include psychology and British military history.

He relaxes by spending time with his twin sons and continues to support local Autism charities as an advisor.
