The food and drinks sector in Wales is massive. From small cafes and restaurants through to factories producing meals on an industrial scale for supermarkets – Wales has it all. We’ve worked with a number of different types of food and drink business over the years, funding property deals, new equipment and general expansion plans. Here’s three to give you a flavour of the food business scene:

Porro – Italian-inspired restaurant in Cardiff
We helped fund the opening of a second Porro restaurant in Cardiff this November with a six figure investment. The deal will create nine full time equivalent jobs in their new east of Cardiff restaurant. With a focus on local ingredients, the team behind the small Welsh chain are keen to expand further.

Wholebake – snack bar manufacturer in Wrexham and Corwen
We made a £750,000 debt and equity investment in Wholebake to help fund a management buyout in 2011.Following our investment the company has grown, with its products widely available in a number of UK-wide supermarkets. In 2014 we had a profitable exit from the north Wales business when Bridges Ventures acquired a controlling stake in the firm – creating 60 new jobs.

Wright’s Food Emporium – delicatessen and diner in Llanarthne
A £120,000 loan from Finance Wales helped transform the historic Golden Grove Arms in Llanarthne into the new home of Wright’s Food Emporium. The diner and delicatessen moved from smaller premises in 2015 as their business grew. Co-owner Simon Wright said:

“Our new home in Llanarthne is larger and gives us the flexibility we need to develop our business in the future.  We’re already welcoming more diners because we can now open in the evening.”
