Feedback ‘Vital’ to New Anglesey Flood Plans

Businesses who have been affected by flooding are being asked to provide feedback on plans to manage future flood risks on Anglesey.

Anglesey Council says that feedback will be ‘vital’ as a revised version of the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) is published for consultation.

Coinciding with the launch of Wales Climate Week 2024, it says the six-week consultation period will help improve flood risk management around the Island.

It will include an online survey, and a series of drop-in sessions where members of the public can speak with council staff.

The four drop-in sessions will be held on:

  • Tuesday, November 19th; 2-7pm at the Ebeneser Centre, Llangefni, LL77 7PN
  • Wednesday November 20th; 2-7pm at the Memorial Hall, Amlwch, LL68 9ET
  • Monday November 25th; 2-7pm at Beaumaris Town Hall LL58 8AP
  • Thursday November 28th; 2-7pm at Holyhead Library, Market Hall, LL65 1HH

The draft Local Flood Risk Management Strategy was recently signed off for consultation by the County Council’s Executive.

Its Planning, Public Protection and Climate Change portfolio holder, Councillor Nicola Roberts said:

“Climate change will continue to pose significant challenges for us as a local authority. Public feedback is therefore imperative if we’re to ensure that the revised draft reflect the needs and concerns of our communities.

“We’re particularly interested to hear from those affected by flooding in the past. Their views will be important to help ensure that the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and its action plans are reasonable, effective, and sustainable.

“By taking part in this consultation, you’ll be helping us improve flood risk management around the Island.”

Under Section 9 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Anglesey County Council – as the Lead Local Flood Authority – has a duty to develop, maintain, apply and monitor a Strategy for local flood risk management. It is also required to consult the public and other relevant stakeholders whilst developing the strategy.

The proposed LFRMS and Action Plans outline Anglesey Council’s proposals for managing local flood risk over the next six years.

This survey wants feedback on the draft LFRMS and its action plans; and also includes questions on the accompanying Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environment Report and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA).

The online survey is available in both Welsh and English. You can access the survey here: https://www.anglesey.gov.wales/flood-risk-strategy

Paper copies of the questionnaire or an easy read version are available upon request. The consultation period will end on Friday, December 20th.
