Next Steps for Food Regulation in the UK – Post-Brexit Options, the Developing Role of Regulators, Safety, Standards, and the Future Direction of UK Government Policy
This in-person conference will discuss the way forward for food regulation and standards, the evolving role of UK regulators, and priorities for supporting health, innovation and the sustainability of the UK food system.
It is bringing together stakeholders with regulators and policymakers to discuss next steps for the UK’s regulatory approach post-Brexit – against the backdrop of significant potential changes to government food policy under a new administration.
Delegates will examine key issues in the context of developments including objectives outlined in the FSA’s Food you can trust five-year strategy.
Overall, areas for discussion include:
- trends and innovation – monitoring business operations, use of innovation, and consumer behaviours post-pandemic – assessing where regulatory approaches can add the most value
- safety – how inspections are recovering – the impact of changes in examination – addressing staffing challenges – tackling food crime with the pressure of rising prices
- standards – consumer priorities and trust – supporting local food standards and their enforcement – key issues for trade deals – navigating challenges around delayed import controls
- surveillance – assessing the impact of Brexit on food safety monitoring – responding to threats – innovative approaches available to the UK going forward
- regulation – assessing FSA funding and capacity to meet its extra responsibilities – the evolving FSA and FSS roles – supporting health and sustainability improvements, including in school food
- trade – the impact of delayed import controls – assessing standards within trade deals so far, and priorities for the future
- long-term objectives – opportunities for building evidence-based food science – supporting delivery of regulatory ambitions into the future
We are pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with Professor Susan Jebb, Chair, Food Standards Agency; Geoff Ogle, Chief Executive, Food Standards Scotland; and Helen Munday, President, Institute of Food Science & Technology.
The conference will be an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who are due to attend from Food Standards Scotland and the Welsh Government.
