An Iconic Newport store drew the crowds with a special official re-opening event.
Legendary menswear store Chessmen is celebrating its 50th birthday under new ownership and marked the occasion with last Friday’s (June 29) event.
Newport County AFC manager Michael Flynn was the guest of honour and he cut the ribbon to re-open Chessmen with store manager Nick Aston.
Mr Flynn, who masterminded County’s famous ‘great escape’ from relegation at the end of the 2016-17 season before guiding the club to 11th place in League Two last season and an historic FA Cup run that included two matches against Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur, signed autographs and posed for photographs with Exiles fans young and old at the Newport Retail Park store.
“I was really pleased to re-open Chessmen. The name has been around for as long as I can remember in Newport.
“I was impressed with the new-look store and the range of clothes on sale.
“Hopefully Chessmen will see plenty of County fans using their store and we’ll see plenty of Chessmen customers at Rodney Parade.”
The Newport-born manager will sign autographs and pose for photos with County fans and Chessmen customers during the evening.
Friday’s event included a drinks reception and music from a local DJ and Newport singer-songwriter Jack Perrett.
Customers who attended the event received a 20% discount on everything they bought, and some lucky attendees won gift vouchers in Chessmen’s ‘golden ticket’ promotion. Customers were handed envelopes during the evening with some of them containing gift vouchers worth £50, £25 or £10.
Chessmen owner John Stanaway said:
“We had a great evening and the event was just one of a number of promotions we have lined up as we put the Chessmen name firmly back on the map.
“We had a great turnout and we were very grateful to Michael Flynn for giving up his time to perform the re-opening.
“He was fantastic with everyone who attended, whether they wanted an autograph, a photo or just a chat about the new season.”
Chessmen is based on the ground floor of the Tesco Extra development at Newport Retail Park.
Brands stocked by Chessmen include Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green, Farah, Original Penguin, Guide London and Mish Mash.
