As Swansea waits to find out today if it has won its bid for UK City of Culture 2021, Oscar-winning Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones CBE has sent a special message from her Bermuda home, backing the city’s bid, and asking everyone in her hometown to join her.
Catherine, who is also a Tony-Award winner and star of Chicago, Zorro and Traffic, is rooting for Swansea to get a coveted award of its own. Born and raised in the city, Catherine got her early grounding in theatre and dance here, with the Hazel Johnson Dance School, which used to meet in St Alban’s Church in Treboeth.
“I’m lending my support to my hometown, the city of Swansea, in its bid to become UK City of Culture 2021 because it has supported me for many, many years. There isn’t enough time for me to go on about my love for Swansea but I am humbled by the fact that I am joined by so many creative people who were born and brought up there, in backing the bid. Swansea has meant so much to me in my life. Please join me in supporting Swansea city to become UK City of Culture 2021.”
Robert Francis-Davies from the Swansea 2021 team and Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects said:
“It’s not every day you get a special message from an Oscar-winning Hollywood star and it is fantastic to have Catherine Zeta Jones backing our bid! Catherine has always been a great champion of Swansea and Gower and she is very familiar with the cultural heritage of the city – and attuned to its potential. The fact that she has taken time out of her very busy schedule to send us this message says a lot about how crucial the UK City of Culture 2021 bid is for this part of the world.”
