A major hydroelectric scheme at Radyr Weir is on track to be completed this Spring.

At a recent site visit senior officers and local politicians were given a progress report on the project and shown the newly commissioned screw turbines which are expected to generate enough electricity to power 550 homes.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, Cllr Ramesh Patel said:

“I was very impressed with the construction work and in particular the two magnificent Archimedean screw turbines. This is a very exciting development and once again goes to show that Cardiff is leading the way when it comes to green energy.”

Radyr Weir was chosen for this renewable energy project because of the power of the water flowing through the river Taff and the height difference caused by the weir.

Assembly Member for Cardiff North, Julie Morgan said:

“I think it’s wonderful that local authorities are involved in creating these kinds of projects and I’d like to congratulate City of Cardiff Council on what they’ve achieved in the face of huge pressures. It’s very exciting and I hope that this will lead to similar projects across Wales.”

Ward Member for Radyr and Morganstown, Cllr Rod McKerlich said:

“I am very happy to have this development within my ward. Not only will it provide renewable energy for over 500 homes but also when the new picnic area and display boards have been completed, the site will be a perfect location for families to enjoy the splendour of this part of the Taff Trail.”

The picnic area is to be created adjacent to the scheme and an improved fish pass which will make it easier for fish to travel upstream.
