As part of our #PembrokeshireBusinessWeek, we've been talking to Alun Thomas from Finance Wales, who have offices in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire.

Finance Wales is a Welsh investment company which backs small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) with growth finance.

Alun Thomas is an experienced senior banker who has over 30 years’ worth of experience of working with SMEs within his previous roles at ABM Amro, Lloyds TSB and Royal Bank of Scotland. He has a broad range of experience in corporate finance, structured finance, government lending, invoice discounting and factoring in addition to turnaround funding/management.

Firstly, how long have you been working for Finance Wales?
Having spent some 30 years as a banker, asset-funder and structured financier I joined Finance Wales in 2013. I work out of our West Wales office in Llanelli. Before joining the team as a Senior Investment Executive I was a director of business support with Barclays. Before that I was with Lloyds, the Royal Bank of Scotland and ABN Amro.  I was also the youngest ever Bank Manager with Bank of Wales in their Carmarthen office.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with SMEs and plc’s from a range of different industries and sectors throughout my career. I’m passionate about supporting growth. We’re actively investing in the area and I’m personally always keen to hear from companies who want help with funding.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really enjoy running and playing golf – I’ve even completed the London Marathon – which was a massive challenge. I also enjoy biking and hill-walking. On weekends I love to go for cycle or a walk along the coastal path.

What’s the best thing about West Wales?
The countryside. It is stunning and largely unspoilt.

Which businesses have you worked with in Pembrokeshire?
I’ve worked with dozens of exciting companies in Pembrokeshire and West Wales.  These include, Giltar Hotel Tenby, Dyfed Homes Aberystwyth and Mainport Engineering, Pembroke – where we co-invested with HSBC and were able to fund a significant expansion of their premises.

What sort of deals can you help with?
Finance Wales can help with debt, equity and mezzanine investments. We can work with all SMEs based in Wales or looking to relocate here. We can fund from £1000 through to £2million plus. Whatever your needs, we can help.
What’s the best way for businesses to get in touch with you?

I’m always open to hear about new investment opportunities in Pembrokeshire and West Wales. Companies can call me on 07881 379006 or email [email protected]. At Finance Wales we’re also interested in co-investment opportunities, so other funders and intermediaries are also welcome to drop me a line.
