Law firm Blake Morgan has been named as Wales’ leading legal advisor to the social housing sector.
Ranked as the only Band 1 firm in Wales by Chambers UK, the authoritative guide to the legal profession in the UK, Blake Morgan is described as “the go-to practice for both contentious and non-contentious social housing issues. Regularly involved in sizeable development work, as well as procurement issues, financing and housing management.’
Housing management practice head Siân Jones comes recommended for her broad social housing practice, which includes acting on contentious antisocial behaviour matters. Sources note that she's “very professional and knows her law.”
Partner Louise Howells is particularly recognised for her strength in regeneration and development matters. “She is a tenacious lawyer,” one client reports, adding: “She is results-focused and really committed to getting work done.”
Advising over 70 social housing providers across Wales and England, clients include Pennaf Group, Newport City Homes, Melin Homes, Wales and West Housing Association and Linc-Cymru Housing Association.
Recent highlights include acting for Cardiff Community Housing Association in the £20 million redevelopment of the Maelfa Shopping Centre in Cardiff, which included 38 affordable housing units and 16 affordable homes. Blake Morgan also advised Pobl Group on the acquisition and redevelopment of Aberafan House in Port Talbot, which included amending the lease agreements, subcontracts and transfer documents.
Chambers UK also listed 13 of the firm’s Cardiff-based teams in its 2018 edition, with 10 of those achieving the highest band 1 ranking, and the rest in the second band.
There was praise for the firm’s “formidable” Corporate practice in Wales, which is “distinguished by its public company expertise and work for management teams in private equity transactions.”
The guide also singled out Blake Morgan’s “stellar” Employment team, its Information Technology specialists, described as “leading in the market”, its “market-leading” litigation practice, and its Real Estate team, praised for “notable expertise”.
It describes Blake Morgan as “one of the leading full-service law firms, providing clients with access to a depth of legal skill and experience,” and adds: “Clients have a deep reservoir of goodwill for the firm as a result of its ‘exemplary service’ code of practice, its heritage and the access it provides to expertise, resource and sector specialisms.”
