An innovative mobile ticketing system is being rolled out across the Arriva Trains Wales network after it was used for just under 400,000 journeys on ATW services during the first 12 months of its launch on the Cardiff and Valleys network.
Rail passengers across the Arriva Trains Wales network will be able to benefit from the cost savings available by using the award-winning Mobile Multi-flex ticket – the first mobile ticketing system of its kind in the UK.
Since its trial on the Cardiff and Valleys routes in 2015, more than 67,000 customers have downloaded the App and have made over 360,000 journeys using the innovative new ticket to date.
Now available on all main commuter routes (where ATW sets the fare), Mobile-multi flex tickets allow customers to make a saving of up to 16% in comparison to the price of selected Day Return tickets when buying the 12 journey Multi-flex product.
Tickets can be bought to travel between any two places (six in each direction), and can be stored on a smartphone for up to three months after the date of purchase.
The ticketing system is particularly beneficial to part-time and flexitime commuters who use the train intermittently or for any occasional train travel needs such as attending sporting events.
Tickets must be purchased through the free ATW Tickets app, which is available to download through all smartphone platforms. Once downloaded, Multi-flex tickets are then available to purchase anytime, anywhere as long as data signal from the mobile phone service or Wi-Fi provider is available.
In September the ATW Tickets app was upgraded to allow passengers to buy long distance journey Advance mTickets on their smartphones for journeys across Wales and into areas of England.
Lynne Milligan, Customer Services Director for Arriva Trains Wales, said:
“After the success of the Mobile Multi-flex ticket system along the Cardiff and Valleys lines, it was an easy choice to roll the Multi-flex tickets out across our wider network.
“At Arriva Trains Wales we are always trying to understand the needs of our passengers and with the majority of UK employees (77 per cent) working in organisations that provide some kind of flexible working*, we had a strong desire to reward loyal users of our trains who do not travel on our services regularly enough to benefit from the savings provided by a normal season ticket.”
“With societal change in working patterns and increasing demand for more flexible fare options, we have delivered products which deliver value for money and a more convenient way of purchasing train tickets for our customers.
“With more passengers now able to access this innovative new ticket, it highlights Arriva Trains Wales’ desire to be industry leaders in utilising and developing new technology and our efforts to better our customer service offering.”
Passengers who have downloaded the ATW Tickets app, are also now able to access a greater range of tickets after the train operating company expanded the product range available on its mobile app service.
From April 2016 a wide range of Cheap Day, Off Peak, Standard Day, Super Off Peak and Standard Open mTickets have been released through the ATW tickets app to keep up with consumer demand for the need to purchase items on the go via smart phones and tablets.
Passengers will be able to scan their mTickets on new mobile scanners placed at station gate-lines after the train company invested £250,000 in the installation of new mobile scanners at key stations across its network.
Scanners have been introduced at Swansea, Cardiff Central, Cardiff Queens Street, Cathays, Bridgend and Shrewsbury and this year will see the installation of more scanners at stations including Chester, Neath, Rhyl and Hereford.
The mTickets need to be activated prior to travel and can then either be validated by staff at the gate-line or by scanning the smartphone against the new barcode readers.
