Sustainable Transport & Mobility – Putting the Citizin at the Heart of Urban Travel
Our fourth annual Sustain Wales Summit returns on 09 May 2019 with a focus on sustainable transport and mobility: putting the citizen at the heart of urban travel.
The summit will focus on three key areas:
Air Quality
Healthy travel, healthy communities

· Low emission transport alternatives to the car
· Clean air innovations
Active Travel
Changing the way we move around our towns and cities
· Integrating active travel
· Mobility Credits
· Active travel in the workplace

· Car clubs / shared mobility
Poor air quality is now recognised across the UK and the rest of the world as a public health priority. It has significant impacts on health, child development and environmental quality.
The Welsh Government and Cardiff Council have been challenged to address the issue and both recognise that addressing air quality delivers multiple additional benefits such as decarbonising transport, an increase in active travel, and less productivity lost to road congestion.
The goals of the Well-being of Future Generations Act are well served by any action that addresses the joint threats of air quality and global warming/climate change. Through the combination of the Future Generations, Environment, Active Travel, Planning, and Health and Social Well-being Acts, Wales now has a legislative architecture that gives permission and imperative to take radical action to change the way we travel.
Changing how we travel will change our health, our economy and our environment.
Much of our economy and infrastructure is based on the assumption that the car is a symbol of personal success, a liberator that propels us to our socio-economic aspiration. That assumption is now at least thirty five years out of date. In the twenty first century we will see mobility as a service and the car as a tool – a mere conveyance that is burdensome and costly to own. We will flit effortlessly between different transport modes, seeking the quickest and most convenient way to get to our destination. Transport will still be the means that people reach their aspirations but it will no longer be an end in itself. Smart, low carbon and clean, transport will be democratised and diversified.
In order to achieve this vision, we have to start planning now, thinking in the long-term, collaborating at an organisational level while involving citizens in the design stage. Only through this integration of specialisms, interests and transport modes, will we be able to prevent pitfalls and deliver the vision of a transport system that delivers well-being for all.
We will be exploring the challenges and pressures facing our growing urban environments; as well as looking at innovative approaches being taken towards creating clean and healthy towns and cities for future generations.
Everyone has a role to play and we will be sharing good practice and ideas from local, national and international perspective.
