Description

Cardiff University's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences welcomes British Academy fellows, Professor Sir Paul Collier FBA, CBE and Professor Colin Mayer FBA, to speak at Cardiff Business School on Thursday 14 March 2019.

Both speakers will share the findings of their new work and discuss the Academy’s cross-disciplinary research programme, The Future of the Corporation, which highlights the latest thinking on the future of capitalism and on the place and role of the corporation in society.

  • Professor Sir Paul Collier FBA, CBE is a professor of economics and public policy in the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. He is also a director of the International Growth Centre, the Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies and a fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford. Sir Paul is author of The Future of Capitalism: Facing the New Anxieties (2018) – a passionate work that suggests ‘ethical ways’ of healing rifts in the fabric of our society.

  • Professor Colin Mayer FBA is the Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. He was Dean of the Saïd Business School between 2006 and 2011. Professor Mayer is the author of Prosperity: Better Business Makes the Greater Good (2018), which calls for reform and puts forward a new vision in which the corporation becomes an entity promoting economic and social wellbeing.

The event will be hosted by Professor Damian Walford Davies, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and facilitated by Professor Rick Delbridge, University Dean of Research, Innovation and Enterprise and Professor of Organizational Analysis at Cardiff Business School. Following each speaker, discussions will be framed and responded to by Professor Calvin Jones (Cardiff Business School) and Professor Gill Bristow (School of Geography and Planning), both of whom will provide a Welsh context for the debate.

Following the two talks, there will be a panel session with opening comments from Professor Phillip Brown (Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Social Sciences) on his Review of Digital Innovation for the Economy and the Future of Work in Wales and from Professor Rachel Ashworth (Dean of Cardiff Business School), on the Public Value ethos of Cardiff Business School.
